Repairing water damage, whether it is the result of a broken pipe, wet ceiling or toilet backup, clean up is particularly important for the health and comfort of your business, hotel or home. Left unaddressed, the damage can lead to mold, toxic growth and a weakened structure.
Step 1 – Stop the Source of Water
The first and most important step is stop the water from flooding. Replace the leaking pipe or a broken hose. If its a fire-sprinkler or fire that needs to be addressed immediately, do not delay. Replace that burst hose, broken pipe or appliance with new hardware and you are good to go.
Step 2 - Vacuum and Dry the area Above and Below
Ideally a high power vacuum is used to dry the area.. Remove any damage drywall, carpet and baseboards. Cut away damaged portions and place drying equipment. Drying equipment usually consist of fans and dehumidifiers. If you need help of a restoration company in Orange County, feel free to give us a call.714-625-7595
Before you start, protect the floor and furniture by spreading a cover over them. Once the leak has been sealed or fixed, dry the ceiling with towels, a vacuum, and/or fans. You have to dry the area both below and above the ceiling, carpet and drywall.
* Be careful in moving furniture, lamps and other electric appliances submerged in water.
Step 3 – Remove the Damaged Parts of the Ceiling, Flooring and Drywall
If there are any portions of the ceiling that are loose or bulging, you should scrape them away. Use a putty knife or paint scraper to remove any flaking or chipping surface as well. You won’t have to scrape anything, however, if the ceiling is still flat and smooth. *Certain states do require testing before this step is taken. Call is if you need help with asbestos or lead testing before moving forward.
Step 4 – Prepare the Ceiling Surface, carpet or drywall and flooring.
The danger of mold forming and spreading is always present. To avoid this additional, and rather costly, nuisance make sure that the damaged area is completely dry before you start with the actual repairs.
Step 5 – Prime and Paint
First apply a coat of primer afterwards you can start to paint. Primer must be fully dry before paint gets applied.
